Toku Reader · iOS

Read Japanese and Chinese without stopping.

Paste a page, open a book, point the camera at a sign. Toku puts the reading above every kanji — per character, not per word — and one tap gives you the meaning without taking you out of the sentence.

Free to try. No account needed to read.

01 · The engine

One character. Five readings.

生 is read at least five different ways, and which one is correct depends entirely on the word it happens to be sitting in. A dictionary can’t tell you. Toku decides from the sentence around it, then puts the answer above the character.

one character
生まれるu-mareruto be born
生きるi-kiruto live
生ビールnamadraught beer — raw, unprocessed
先生sen-seiteacher
芝生shiba-fua lawn

02 · What it reads

Bring your own text.

Toku isn’t a course with a syllabus. It’s the layer you put over whatever you were already trying to read.

Books, the way they were set

Open an EPUB and it stays vertical, right to left, with the author’s own ruby intact. Turning readings off doesn’t reflow a single line.

Damo, the daruma

03 · Damo

One name, two readings.

A monk remembered as Bodhidharma carried Buddhist teaching from India to China. His name is written 達磨 in Japanese and 达摩 in Chinese — read Daruma in one language, Dámó in the other. In Japan the story settled into a weighted papier-mâché doll that rights itself whenever it’s tipped over. It’s sold with both eyes blank: you paint the first when you set a goal, and the second when you keep it. Damo is that doll — the oldest bridge between the two languages this app teaches.

Reading is free. Forever.

Read, listen, and watch without limits, with 50 free word lookups a day.

Premium makes lookups unlimited. That's the entire difference.

That number is read live from the same configuration the app enforces — this page and the app cannot disagree.

Well read.

Start with one page of something you actually wanted to read. That’s the whole idea.
